With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season opener just days away, the "Orange Army" has been hit with a significant setback. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) fans were hoping for a flying start, but reports have now confirmed that their captain and marquee Australian pacer, Pat Cummins, is set to miss the initial phase of the tournament.
The news comes as a double blow for Australian cricket fans, as Josh Hazlewood (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) is also expected to miss the start of the season due to similar fitness concerns.
The Injury Update: What happened to Pat Cummins?
Pat Cummins has been battling a lumbar stress injury in his lower back since late 2025. The injury has been a recurring issue, forcing him to miss the T20 World Cup 2026 and much of the recent Ashes series.
While there were hopes that the Australian skipper would recover in time for the IPL 2026 curtain-raiser against RCB on March 28, Cricket Australia (CA) medical staff have yet to grant him official clearance. Lotus365 Reports suggest that Cummins is still in the "rehab phase" and will only travel to India once his fitness is 100% verified.
The Captaincy Conundrum: Who will lead SRH?
The biggest question facing head coach Daniel Vettori and the SRH management is: Who leads the side in the absence of Pat Cummins?
Since Cummins took over, he has been credited with transforming the culture of the team, leading them to the 2024 final. Without his tactical acumen on the field, SRH needs a temporary replacement. Several names are currently in the mix:
Ishan Kishan: The frontrunner for the role. Kishan recently led Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title and has shown significant maturity in his leadership.
Abhishek Sharma: A local favorite and a core part of the SRH setup. While he has domestic captaincy experience with Punjab, he is considered a secondary option to Kishan.
Travis Head: The fellow Australian has immense international experience, though the management might prefer an Indian captain to keep the overseas slots flexible.
Impact on the Bowling Attack
Losing Cummins isn't just a leadership blow; it’s a massive void in the pace department. In the last two seasons, Cummins has been the "glue" that holds the SRH bowling unit together during the middle and death overs.
In his absence, SRH might look toward:
Brydon Carse: The English pacer could be the direct overseas replacement in the playing XI.
Ehsan Malinga: A young talent who might get an earlier-than-expected look into the starting lineup.
Harshal Patel: The Indian veteran will now have to shoulder much more responsibility as the leader of the attack.
Looking Ahead
SRH is scheduled to face the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28. Following the opener, they face Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants.
The franchise remains optimistic that Cummins will join the squad by the second week of April. However, in a tournament as fast-paced as the IPL, a slow start can be the difference between making the playoffs and a bottom-half finish.
